THE YOUNGEST VOLCANO IN THE WORLD
Paricutín
Pack your camera and get ready for one of the most stunning sites in all of Mexico. On February 22, 1943, a fountain of lava began to spew from the middle of a field outside of the small town of Paricutín, 90 km. from Patzcuaro.
The encroaching lava flow slowly overtook the town, destroying everything except the towering bell tower of the church. An ashen volcanic cone measuring over 1,400 ft. now sits atop the once unremarkable field and the ground is a cracked series of black, frozen lava flows for acres in all directions.
You can
reach the buried village of Paricutín by foot or horseback from the town
of Angahuan.
