RUTA PICHÁTARO - PARACHO

Paracho

Pichátaro and Parácho are 30 km and 90 km from Patzcuaro respectively. Both communities are located within a region known as the “Meseta Purépecha.” We suggest this route because it combines the best of several authentic regional crafts: the woodworking (furniture, masks, decorative items) and hand-embroidered fabrics (clothing, tablecloths, pillows) of Pichátaro, and the virtuoso guitar and musical instrument makers of Parácho.

It’s estimated that around 80 percent of the villagers of Pichátaro depend on the production and sale of artisan crafts for their livelihood. In July and August, the village celebrates its annual rustic furniture and embroidered textile fair, which happens to coincide with the guitar festival in Parácho.

The humble villagers of Parácho make some of the finest guitars in the world. Each piece can take months to make, using only the highest quality local wood. Today, the artisans of Parácho make over 25 different types of musical instruments from violins, cellos, and basses to mandolins and other specialty guitars.
