ARCHEOLOGICAL ZONES OF PÁTZCUARO

The three most important archeological sites in the Lake Patzcuaro region are Ihuatzio, Tzintzuntzan and Tingambato, and all are located within 20 minutes of downtown Patzcuaro.

From 1510 to 1575, Ihuatzio served as the religious ceremonial center of the Purépecha kingdom. What remains is an impressive flat-topped stone structure with significant murals and an impressive collection of ritual artifacts.

Founded in the late 15th century, Tzintzuntzan was the last great capital of the Purépecha people. A short walk above the quaint, modern town of Tzintzuntzan, you’ll find a collection of large, smooth-walled stone pyramids resting on a broad, grassy platform. Notice the mysterious markings etched into seemingly random stones.

Tingambato was settled far earlier than the other ancient towns of the region, between 200 and 900 AD. The methods of construction and materials at the archeological site are similar to those found in the famous pyramids of Teotihuacan outside of Mexico City.
